Musk’s Companies End Legal Dispute With Apple

X Corp and SpaceXAI, both controlled by Elon Musk, have unexpectedly withdrawn their antitrust claims against Apple. The move changes the dynamics of the case involving the technology giants, although the fierce legal battle with OpenAI continues.

Shares in the Red

The decision to step back from the legal fight against Apple comes at a sensitive time for SpaceX. The company has yet to fully convince investors on the stock market, as its shares have fallen by 6.14% since their public debut on June 12, 2026. This instability forms part of the broader market backdrop against which Musk’s companies are making their moves in the rapidly developing artificial intelligence industry.

Lawsuit Against Apple Ends

Against this tense backdrop, X Corp and SpaceXAI, a division of SpaceX, asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit they jointly filed against Apple and OpenAI only last year. However, the official filing did not explain the reason for the sudden decision or disclose whether the parties had reached an agreement. None of those involved immediately responded to requests for comment.

ChatGPT Integration Under Scrutiny

The settled dispute centered on serious allegations of market-power abuse. The lawsuit originally claimed that Apple had violated antitrust laws by exclusively integrating ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence features on iPhones and other devices. According to Musk’s companies, Apple and OpenAI sought to lock up the market, preserve their monopolies and shut out competitors such as X and xAI. Apple denied all allegations from the outset, arguing that its integration of OpenAI’s technology was not exclusive.

Claims Against OpenAI Continue

Although the case against Apple has been closed, the second part of the dispute remains fully active. This is particularly notable because a judge ruled in November 2026 that the case could proceed, handing Musk a preliminary victory. The withdrawal of claims against the iPhone maker has no effect on the lawsuit against OpenAI. OpenAI has accused Musk of conducting a targeted legal campaign against the company and also prevailed against him in a separate case in May, in which he alleged that it had abandoned its original nonprofit mission of developing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity.

Battle for the Chatbot Market

The uncompromising conflict reflects a broader and highly consequential battle for dominance in the rapidly expanding generative AI market. Following its launch in late 2022, ChatGPT became the fastest-growing consumer application in history. In response to this boom, xAI acquired the X platform for USD 33 billion last year to strengthen its ability to train its own chatbots. Which side ultimately gains the upper hand will now depend largely on further developments in the continuing legal proceedings between Musk’s companies and OpenAI.
