Markets gapped up as tensions in the Middle East subsided

Precious metals and equity index futures opened higher on Monday morning as markets responded positively to news of a pause in US-Iran strikes.
Financial markets responded positively to news of a pause in US-Iran exchanges, which alleviated crude oil prices and prompted a short-term risk-on movement. Following weeks of military escalation, the Middle East experienced a tentative pause as back-channel diplomacy intensified. Iran announced a cessation of retaliatory strikes after a pause in US attacks, potentially opening the door for diplomatic negotiations.

Precious metals and equity index futures opened higher on Monday morning, reflecting a slightly bullish overall sentiment. Gold led gains, with silver prices also increasing. US stock futures showed modest advances, though it remains to be determined whether this movement was driven primarily by short covering or new institutional participation. Meanwhile, crude oil futures declined following the pause in military actions between the two nations, easing concerns about supply disruptions. Brent crude retreated from $102 to $88 per barrel, while WTI crude fell over 6%, from $93 to $84.

Safe-Haven Dollar Weakens as Middle East Tensions Ease

The US dollar weakened on Monday as investors weighed optimism regarding a potential de-escalation of the US-Israeli conflict, with the currency currently influenced more by risk sentiment than by interest rate differentials. Investors moved away from the safe-haven greenback as geopolitical risk premiums began to unwind.

Markets In Focus

Looking ahead, heightened geopolitical developments are expected to continue significantly impacting investor sentiment and market dynamics throughout the week. Despite a modest improvement in conditions, geopolitical risks remain elevated following recent events, including Houthi attacks on Saudi oil facilities on the Red Sea coast and Ukraine’s strike on an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea. Conversely, shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz has remained at a three-week low, with no new attacks reported in the past 72 hours.

In addition to these geopolitical considerations, the week’s agenda is densely packed with critical economic data releases, central bank meetings, and major earnings reports from the technology sector.
