ExxonMobil and Chevron, two leading American energy companies, operate as fully integrated oil and gas businesses across the entire value chain. Both firms reported record quarterly profits for the second quarter, benefiting from rising crude oil prices. Additional factors contributing to the profit surge include higher refining margins, increased demand for fuel exports, and low gasoline inventories.
Shares of ExxonMobil and Chevron rose steadily throughout the month, supported by escalating tensions in the Middle East. Both companies gained from the geopolitical risks surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage that typically transports about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply.
ExxonMobil posted a second-quarter profit of $14.5 billion, more than doubling its earnings from the same period last year, marking its highest quarterly profit since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022. Chevron, the second-largest U.S. oil company, reported a profit of $12.1 billion, significantly increasing from $2.5 billion in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
"Our strong Q2 performance is a result of disciplined investment and strong execution that drove record U.S. upstream production, record crude throughput in our U.S. refineries, and exceptional reliability across key assets"- Chevron CEO Mike Wirth said.
